Enrol your child in a public school

Apply for a place in a publicly funded school, shown here for the Comunidad de Madrid, where a child who arrives outside the normal window goes through the extraordinary admission period.

For: Parents or legal guardians of a child who is joining a Spanish publicly funded school for the first time, for example after moving to Madrid.

What you need

Steps

  1. Check that your situation is covered by the extraordinary period: arriving in the Madrid school system counts.

The extraordinary period also covers a move to another municipality and other justified reasons.

Comunidad de Madrid: Madrid-Norte education area, extraordinary period

  2. Find schools that have vacancies for your child's stage and year, using the school finder and the Secretaría Virtual.

The Secretaría Virtual lets you check the vacancies of a particular school.

Comunidad de Madrid: apply for admission (infant, primary, ESO, Bachillerato)

  3. Download and fill in the extraordinary admission application, and have both parents or guardians sign it.

  4. Submit one application for your child, in person or online, at a school with vacancies, or in person at the Servicio de Apoyo a la Escolarización (SAE) for your area.

Only one application per pupil is accepted. For the Secretaría Virtual the page lists Cl@ve, an @SCV registration or Roble/Raíces credentials.

Done when: Your child has been placed in a school and you know which one to enrol at.

What varies

This recipe follows the Comunidad de Madrid only. Every region runs its own admission, dates and forms, and the Madrid page is written for the current school year, so its dates change each year. The page we read does not list which documents to attach (for example the padron, health cover or the translated birth certificate), so ask the school or the SAE what yours wants. Other regions: check the education pages of your own regional government.
