What you need
Steps
Note the deadline: apply for the TIE in person within one month of your authorisation being granted or taking effect.
Start the steps below straight away, because appointments can be weeks away.
Download form EX-17 from the Ministry of Inclusion and print it twice. Tick TARJETA INICIAL (first card) or RENOVACIÓN DE TARJETA (renewal).
Fill it in capital letters with a black pen. Do not sign it until the appointment if you are unsure of details.
Open the police fee generator for tasa 790 code 012, fill it in on screen, then download and print it.
Pick the line that matches your case (first card, renewal or long-term) in the police fee table.
Pay the printed fee form at a bank, savings bank or credit union. You do not need an account there. Keep the stamped proof of payment.
Book the appointment for fingerprints ("toma de huellas") through the official cita previa service for procedures before the Policía Nacional.
The booking site is a JavaScript app. Choose the option for fingerprinting and issuing the card in your province.
Go to the appointment yourself with your approval resolution, the two copies of EX-17 and the paid fee form. Hand them over and give your fingerprints.
EX-17 cannot be filed online or by a public register. Ask the confirmation or the office what else to bring (passport, photo).
Come back to collect the card when the office tells you it is ready, at the office that handles card collection ("recogida de tarjeta"). Keep it safe: it is personal and you are responsible for it.
Done when: You hold your physical TIE card.
Common mistakes
- Missing the one-month deadline can bring a penalty. Your approval resolution still has full legal effect while you wait for the card. Real Decreto 1155/2024, art. 209
What varies
Offices differ by province: some handle fingerprints at an Oficina de Extranjería, others at a police station, and the appointment menu wording differs. The list of extra documents (passport, photo) and how collection works is set by your office, so read your appointment confirmation.
